"Departure Bay sits in Central Nanaimo and offers views of the ocean looking east. The natural hills of Departure Bay mean that you don’t need to have a waterfront property to take advantage of these views! Departure Bay has parks and walking trails that make this community a great spot for anyone who is looking to be outdoors. Being in Central Nanaimo, there are many amenities remarkably close by, but you still get that peaceful neighborhood feel."

Departure Bay Parks

Departure Bay Beach

Departure Bay Beach is a great park for anyone who wants to get outdoors. You have the option of walking along the beach, which is great for beachcombing, or you can walk along the paved walkway. No matter which path you choose, you are guaranteed to have a spectacular view across Departure Bay to Newcastle Island. You also get a view of the Departure Bay ferry terminal and a sea plane runway. You can be assured that there is always something to see! Walking snacks and beverages can be provided by Drip Coffee, or the various food trucks that set up shop throughout the year.

This park is also connected to Kinsmen Park which features a picnic and playground area!

Departure Bay Centennial Park

The activity capital of Departure Bay! The Centennial park features baseball diamonds, soccer fields, basketball and ball hockey courts as well as a tennis court! The city has also recently painted pickleball lines in the tennis court for even more functionality. This park is also home to an incredible water park which runs through the summer!

Sugarloaf Mountain Park

Sugarloaf provides a view above what you would see at Departure Bay Park. Just 5-10 minutes up some stairs gets you to the top where you can look out over Departure Bay and parts of Nanaimo.

Wardropper Park (Offleash Dog Park)

Located right across the street from Departure Bay Elementary, Wardropper park is a great offleash area for dogs! This park allows your dog to meet other dogs and run around to their hearts content. The park is fully fenced and allows your dog to run around while you watch. No walking required!

Woodstream Park

If Departure Bay beach is too populated for you, just down the road is Woodstream Park. This park features various walking trails and is set in a forested area with a creek running through the middle. These aren’t the longest trails in Nanaimo, but they offer tranquility and an abundance of vegetation and potential wildlife!
