Discover South Nanaimo
South Nanaimo is a very diverse neighbourhood. Stretching between the Old City, University District and Chase River areas, this neighbourhood has been undergoing extensive revitalization and growth. The proximity to the downtown core as well as University Village makes this neighbourhood very attractive due to the mix of new and older homes. Nanaimo’s South End also has a rich history in the development of the city. In the 1890s it was known as the South Ward and was home to working class families. Some of these heritage homes have been restored, adding to the neighbourhood’s unique character; however, new developments have popped up as large parcels of land owned by farmers have been subdivided into streets of newer homes. This is an area where you can still find affordable homes and proeprties with great investment potential.
South Nanaimo has many outdoor spaces for everyone to enjoy whether you are looking for green space for picnics, or trail walks through nature. South Nanaimo also holds a lot of local businesses and shopping centres to provide you with everything that you may need within the community.
South Nanaimo offers lots of park space as well as walking and hiking trails for every skill level. When you are enjoying these trails be sure to take in the scenery offered every step of the way! If you are looking for somewhere to take the dog for an off-leash walk, Colliery Dam is the perfect place! This large park offers a walking loop that takes you around the dam. There are also water accesses for hot days to go for a swim. You will often see people fishing along the shoreline. During the spring and early summer there is a large waterfall hidden at the far end of the park and the mist from these falls keeps you nice and cool. If you wanted to walk uninterrupted from dogs, there is also an on-leash area to explore. In this area of the park there is also covered picnic areas for a great outdoor barbecue.
Almost right across the road from Colliery Dam is Morrell Nature Sanctuary. This is a great place to explore what feels like an endless trail network. One of these trails was built with kids in mind and you are able to see little doors in the trees where the gnomes of the park live. Off another trail there is a beaver dam pond where you can see different types of wildlife. These trails also connect to different trails so you can make your walk as long as you'd like.
Harewood Centennial Park is a great area for families and includes a playground and water park that is always busy during the summer. There is also a skate park and mountain bike trails to make sure that there is something for everyone in this 15 acre park!
Being one of the larger communities in Nanaimo, South Nanaimo has lots to offer to its residents! There are a handful of local restaurants in the area as well as a brewery. There are a few different options for grocery shopping as well so no matter what area of South Nanaimo you live in, you are very close to everything that you may need. There are also fitness centres and other entertainment options for whatever you may be interested in.
